Dear friends and community,
On September 19, 2010 our community lost a gay teenager, Seth Walsh, to suicide. He was just 13 years old at the time. Seth’s death spurred conversations of opening a center in Bakersfield, an easy access hub to provide a safe, supportive space for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
In November of 2011 the vision became a reality and the Gay & Lesbian Center of Bakersfield opened its doors, offering programs and meeting opportunities for the LGBT community.
Our doors stay open because of people like you. The Center is kicking off its annual fundraising cam-paign, Rainbow Donors. This is a primary source of funding and allows us to continue to fulfill our mis-sion. You play a vital role. Our goal is to obtain $24,000 in Rainbow Donor pledges before the end of the year. These funds will directly support the operating expenses of the center for the calendar year 2015.
The Gay & Lesbian Center is truly a space to be proud of. This year we have moved into a new 1200 square foot facility in downtown Bakersfield. We have expanded our youth programs, even hosting
summer activities where young people can meet and network. Please stop by and enjoy this new and welcoming space.
The Center’s mission is to provide a sense of community, self-respect and hope. We believe that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people of all ages deserve to celebrate and be proud of who they are, and to live full and rewarding lives as productive members of society. Our goal is to empower individuals in achieving these goals.
You are the key to our continued success. Please consider becoming a Rainbow Donor so our community can continue to thrive.
